Although we occasionally perform same day surgery, we strongly prefer potential patients to visit us for a consultation before deciding to proceed. We can then assess the visual needs and potential candidacy for each individual patient. There is always time for explaining the options and answering questions. We utilize extensive testing in our consultations, so that we can get as complete an assessment as possible of your condition prior to recommending a particular procedure.
Important history we will need includes refractive stability, glasses and contact lens history, prior eye surgeries, systemic conditions, medications, pregnancy status, family history of eye disease, allergies.
We will want to know what your visual goals are; this is especially true if you have presbyopia (the reading problems that typically develop around age 40.)
Testing includes visual acuity with correction, pupil size, tear quantity testing, orbscan and topography (corneal shape and thickness tests), slit lamp examination, dominant eye, and refraction if required.
We will then summarize your condition and inform you of any special risks or issues unique to your situation. You will then have then opportunity to ask any questions that you have.
We feel strongly that you should not be pressured to make an immediate decision. The purpose of a consult is for you to find out how good a candidate you are, and to educate you about your choices. If you find a consult experience is more about talking you into scheduling surgery, or extracting money from you, beware!
You will be given written information at the end of the consult. The informed consent is important and should be read prior to your pre-op exam, which takes place after the consult. Financing options and logistics will also be discussed.
